How to use Crystal Clear Outdoor Varnish
Before you start
You need to sand you wood so always make sure you wear a mask to prevent inhaling any dust.
How to prepare stained or varnished wood
- In order to ensure your Crystal Clear Varnish sticks, you need to sand your door or window to remove the existing stain or varnish. Use 120 grit sandpaper and work in a circular motion to remove the varnish or stain.
- Once you’ve done that, use white spirit and a cloth to wipe down the excess dust and clean the surface.
How to prepare new wood for varnishing
- New wood still needs to be smoothed out before you can paint it. But you only need to lightly sand it with 120 grit sandpaper to remove any surface imperfections.
- Wipe down the dust with white spirit and a cloth.
And now you’re ready to paint.
Application
- Give the tin a good stir so the consistency is even and there’s no lumps and bumps.
- As this varnish is clear, there’s no real need to test it on a patch but if you’d like to, you can.
- Grab a brush and apply your varnish in the direction of the grain. Wait six hours for the first coat to dry. Don’t worry about rain though, it’s rainproof in only one hour.
- For the best results, you need three coats. Before you apply the third, lightly sand the surface to ensure you get a properly smooth finish.
- Apply the third coat – it will be dry after six hours.
Aftercare
Cleaning
You can clean your door as normal once the varnish has dried. To keep it looking good as new, wipe down any build ups of grime and dirt to keep your door shining.
You can easily clean your brushes in warm, soapy water.
Repair
If any patches of your door or window become damaged and you need to replace the varnish, it’s not loads of work. All you need to do is sand down the damaged section and replace the varnish following the steps.
